How to write your personal mission statement (and why you need one)

Call it a daily mantra or a quote to come back to when challenges seem rife; having a personal mission statement maintains focus and adds value to your life. See it as the 'elevator pitch' to your personal brand.

You'll find a mission statement in almost every reputable company. It reconfirms their identity and purpose.

Personal branding pioneer and motivational speaker William Arruda expanded on this fact in his book Ditch, Dare, Do: 3D Personal Branding for Executives saying: “a personal mission statement is a critical piece of your brand because it helps you stay focused.”

So now you know the ‘why’, let’s discuss the ‘how’.

The best place to start is to ask yourself three questions:

  1. What am I passionate about?
  2. What are my values? 
  3. What makes me great?

Once you’ve answered those questions and you feel ready to write your mission statement, use this template that links together three elements. It goes:

The value you create + who you’re creating it for + the expected outcome. 

For example:

I use my knowledge, passion and experience in digital media to help students making informed career choices.

Simple, right.

The fun doesn't stop there, however. 

While a personal mission statement creates a renewed sense of purpose and builds self-esteem, the real power is in sharing it. This is because the more it is shared, the more likely you will gain the needed support to achieve your mission.
